Hey there friend! I'm excited to share some tips about deck staining and sealing!
Staining and sealing your deck is crucial for protecting the wood and keeping it looking great for years to come. The finish on your deck takes a beating from the elements like harsh sun, rain, snow and temperature swings. Over time, it will start to fade, crack and peel if you don't maintain it properly. Giving your deck some TLC annually by re-staining and sealing is the best way to guard against premature aging and damage.
Before you get started, it's important to prepare the deck surface thoroughly. Use a deck cleaner or wood brightener solution to remove any existing stain or sealer that is failing. This will also clean off dirt, grime and gray wood fibers to allow the new stain to penetrate deeply. Once clean, be sure to rinse well and allow to fully dry. Any moisture trapped beneath the new stain will cause adhesion issues down the road.
When it comes to choosing a stain, there are many options from semi-transparent to solid colors. Semi-transparent allows more of the natural wood grain to show through, while solid stains provide an opaque, painted look. No matter which you choose, be sure to use a stain made specifically for decks that contains UV protection. This will prevent premature graying and fading. Apply with a pump sprayer, then back-brush for even coverage. Let it dry completely before using the deck again.
